The Stamford Mercury (first published in 1712) and Berrow's Worcester Journal (1690) also lay claim to this title. They point out that the London Gazette is not really a newspaper as it doesn't offer general news coverage; it also has an extremely limited circulation.
The London Gazette was originally known as the Oxford Gazette.
